Learn the Basics

There are at least a bazillion web sites offering chess content. The following two will help you get started.

Learn with ChessKid

ChessKid offers lessons for the absolute beginner. It is aimed squarely at kids, with cartoonish exploding talking chess pieces, etc. There are premium memberships but basic lessons are free.

Learn with Gotham Chess

Gotham Chess is New York IM Levy Rozman. He has a huge following on various online platforms. He's pretty subdued in this video, but he can be a little edgy. Definitely aimed towards older kids and adults.

Learn a Basic Checkmate

Learn the Ladder Mate, one of the most common checkmates in children's chess. Even very young beginners can, and should, master this technique.

Ladder Mate, Part I

The basic technique, with the losing side putting up no resistance.

Ladder Mate, Part II

Enhanced technique, with the losing side putting up a "real" fight.

Are You a Joiner?

There is no shortage of chess organizations. USCF, ISCA, and SCI all maintain tournament calendars.

Fédération Internationale des Échecs

FIDE is the world governing body of chess. It is generally considered to be a corrupt and incompetent organization. Fortunately, you do not need to deal with it unless you are seeking an international title!

US Chess Federation

US Chess, aka USCF, is the governing body of chess in the United States. It has gone through some rough patches and has been near bankruptcy, but seems pretty solid right now. You must be a member to play rated chess!

Indiana State Chess Association

ISCA is the governing body of Indiana chess. It organizes our adult state championships, sponsors other tournaments during the year, and maintains the Indiana Chess Hall of Fame. Being Hoosier run, it's a fine outfit!

Scholastic Chess of Indiana

SCI is the official Indiana scholastic affiliate. It organizes team, individual, and girls state championships for Indiana K-12 students, with its champions moving on to represent Indiana at the national scholastic championships.
